Lumbar degenerative scoliosis is a condition where the spine in your lower back (the lumbar region) develops a curve as you get older. Normally, your spine is straight when you look at it from behind, but in this condition, the bones (vertebrae) in your lower back begin to shift or twist, causing a sideways curve.
This happens because of wear and tear on the spine over time, which can be caused by things like arthritis, disc degeneration, or other age-related changes. As the spine changes, it can affect the way your back and body move, and sometimes it can put pressure on nerves.
Symptoms of lumbar degenerative scoliosis might include:
- Lower back pain or stiffness
- Uneven shoulders or hips (you might notice one side is higher than the other)
- Pain or numbness that radiates down the legs, especially if the curved spine presses on nerves
- Difficulty standing or walking for long periods due to pain or discomfort
Treatment depends on how severe the curve is and how much it’s affecting you. Options can include physical therapy, pain medications, and sometimes surgery if the curve is causing significant problems or nerve issues.
